In the early days following the launch of my small business, I thought I might share with you some things I have learnt during my journey (sorry I hate that term - makes me sound like a reality show contestant but there you have it !):
1. Patience, Patience, Patience !!
Everything takes a long time. Applications for liquor licences, business names, council permits, website development - it all takes time ! The thing that took me the longest was finding a business name - its harder than it sounds and I went through 3 iterations and one legal skirmish before settling on Ultimate Hampers.
Having worked in a 9 to 5 job since leaving school, I realised I had learned to look for direction from others when making decisions. Having your own business means you get to make those critical decisions all on your own. You can ask other's opinions and assistance and bounce ideas off them but at the end of the day you are the boss - its both terrifying and exhilarating !!
3. Working From Home is HARD !!!!
Working from home, especially if you have young children around you can be very tough. There are constant distractions and other things you feel you should be doing (washing, cooking, grocery shopping). Taking phone calls with children chatting in the background is particularly tricky ! It takes real discipline to focus on your work when you are in your home environment and organisation and time management is critical but you just have to accept that there are some days, when kids are sick etc, that you are just not going to get much work done. Those days are the ones that result in late nights working away in the office after the kids have gone to bed.
4. Some People Don't Want You to Take Chances
Whether it's fear or jealousy, some people don't want you to succeed in your own business. "Helpful" stories about other people failing in their business start ups or constant questioning about whether you think you are doing the right thing and how you will possibly manage to juggle family and your own business can make you doubt yourself. Staying strong in the face of this and managing to take the good points on board while discarding the negativity can be difficult. You have to be passionate about your business and really believe in what you are doing to continue through to launch.
5. More People DO Want You to Succeed
I have received a phenomenal amount of support from family and friends since embarking on the adventure of starting my own business. My husband in particular has been very supportive and full of ideas and suggestions on how to improve and move forward. I don't always act on his suggestions but I love hearing them and it's nice to know he has such enthusiasm for my business and belief in my ability to succeed.
At the end of the day, family and friends are the most important thing any of us possess and it's so important to keep that in mind at all stages of developing a new business.

Why ?Essentially, I started Ultimate Hampers because I wanted to change my life.I wanted to escape the rat race of 9 to 5 working for someone else. In my "past life", I was a Corporate Accountant. The money was good, the work was familiar and the hours, while occasionally crazy during peak periods, were mostly sustainable. However, [...]
There is no denying it - everybody loves to receive gifts! Receiving a gift makes you feel both appreciated and valued.I had this feeling first hand just yesterday when my good friend Robyn surprised me with a beautiful bunch of flowers to congratulate me on getting Ultimate Hampers up and running.
